avengers1 Zak Penn discusses Avengers movie plansScreenwriter Zak Penn recently spoke at the Los Angeles Film Festival regarding his plans for Marvel’s “Avengers” crossover film.  Penn emphasized that he wanted to focus on the continuity amongst the individual character films by meeting with each of the writers, taking into account everything that has happened in the films so far.  Apparently, the project’s being taken very seriously.  Here’s what Penn had to say:

“They’re doing Captain America and Thor first, and then Avengers is coming out. They want to see that they’re all connected, not like the Fantastic Four can’t come into the X-Men world, like I was told. I’m taking a meeting next week with the Thor and Captain America people, and we are all going to get together, and I will see what is going to happen. I’ll see where they are leaving the characters; it’s pretty complicated…There’s a board that is tracking what is happening…Marvel is autonomous now. It is night and day: Everyone has read every comic. They know how to make a cool movie.”

“Avengers: The Movie” is scheduled for a 2012 release year.  Considering “Avengers” will most definitely be the ultimate crossover film as well as the culmination of several Marvel superhero films, past and upcoming, you bet Penn needs to take this project seriously.  While he’ll have quite a number of characters to juggle through in this film, take note that it has been done before – successfully.  Anyone remember Zack Snyder’s “Watchmen”?  Or the X-Men films (minus The Last Stand, of course)?  Uh oh, Penn did co-write “X-Men: The Last Stand”, didn’t he – as well as “Elektra” and “Fantastic Four”?  However, he did also write “The Incredible Hulk”, which was…umm, good?  Looks like a tough call here.  Let’s hope Penn has his game together on this one.
