SDCC ’09: “Kick-Ass” panel

Director Matthew Vaughn was present with comic book writers Mark Millar and John Romita Jr., screenwriter Jane Goldman, as well as stars Christopher Mintz-Plasse (McLovin), Chloe Moretz, and Clark Duke.  While the film is still in the process of finding distribution, lots of footage was shown.

In the first clip, which is a trailer, we saw a man with metallic wings strapped to his back as he dives headfirst off a building, but fails to pull up as he crashes devastingly hard onto a car below.  Main character, Dave Lizewski is then at a diner talking to 2 of his friends about the possibility of whether any geek out there has ever considered becoming a real-life superhero.  There is then footage of Red Mist jumping off a waste bin in an alleyway, spraining his ankle, as he meets with Dave as well as some graphic action scenes with Hit Girl and Red Mist battling off thugs in a corridor.

The next clip shows Dave in his regular clothes being threatened away by two street punks.  He heads around the corner and returns in his turquoise costume, holding 2 long bars, and wacking the 2 punks until he suddenly gets knifed in the stomache.  The 2 punks then run off as he limps off, hand over the wound.

In the third clip, which Vaughn mentioned would be quite controversial, was of Nicolas Cage and Chloe Moretz in an empty stadium.  Moretz has a bulletproof vest strapped to her chest, as Cage pulls out a handgun and fires a bullet at her, launching her far across the ground.  Cage examines the bullet caught in the vest, and tells her that they’re giving it a second go.   Cage, once again, shoots her in the chest.

In the final clip, we see Dave in his costume walking into a beat-up apartment where a group of built, African-American gangsters are playing the Xbox 360.  The leader of the gang refuses to leave a friend of Dave’s alone, which is why Dave has dressed up in costume to confront him.  After a few hopeless attempts at battering the gangsters with his sticks, Hit Girl, wearing a mask and cape, slices and dices through with a double-sided ax staff, dismembering limbs and stabbing some of the assailants.  Pretty gruesome indeed.
