Jackie Earle Haley joined producers Andrew Form and Brad Fuller on the panel for the remake of “A Nightmare on Elm Street” and damn, does this film look horrifying. Having finished shooting only 2 weeks ago, the producers were able to compile together an extended trailer for the film.
The footage begins with a human Freddy Krueger running into a warehouse as he is chased by a mob of screaming people. Krueger locks himself in, only to be burned alive by the people as they throw cans of gasoline into the warehouse and light it on fire. Krueger bursts out the door in flames.
We then cut to a series of eerie slow-motion shots of people trying to escape their nightmares. One shot shows a girl sitting by herself in a bombed out classroom and another, of a woman standing in a school hallway wrapped in a clear, plastic bloody bag. Then we see some silhouetted shots of Freddy as he drags his claws alongside various objects and finally a brief shot of his face against a wall.
Some of the highlights mentioned in the panel included the following:
From what was stated by the producers, while certain familiarities would be seen in the new film, it is certainly not an origin story nor a remake of the original. While this may sound blasphemous to some, the producers used “Batman ’89″ and “The Dark Knight” as an example of the direction they were taking with this film.
Robert Englund does not appear in the film, although he supports it.
When asked about the makeup, Jackie Earle Haley said the following:
“I always felt like if I tried to go out in the world wearing the make-up [without the costume]…I think people would have thought it was real. I think it’s scarier, I think it’s more disconcerting and alarming.”
With the negative reputation and poor ratings that horror films have received over the past several years, I really had some doubts about this film, which I, like many of us, initially thought would be a complete remake. The new “Friday the 13th” was okay, at best, and I suppose Rob Zombie’s “Halloween” was a worthy attempt overall. However, from what I’ve seen of this new take on “A Nightmare on Elm Street”, it looks terrifying as hell and it sure sounds like the cast and crew have taken this project as seriously as they should.
“A Nightmare on Elm Street” hits theaters April 30, 2010.
