What to expect if you decide to buy “Icons: The DC Comics & Wildstorm Art of Jim Lee.”

Jim Lee has become the modern marvel in comic books, with his launch on the reboot of X-men with Marvel and now with being the editor in chief of DC comics, Jim Lee has co-founded other comic book publications such as Image and Wildstorm. All of this information however is nothing new to any fan of comic books.
As for myself, I am more a fan of the artwork and what it takes to really be able to be even remotely as sharp and effective as Jim Lee when it comes to art work. On that topic I would like to review this book by saying that it gets 5/5 stars and nothing less.

Although the book does not cover the art work Jim Lee did for Marvel Comics, it does how ever to my delight cover most of his work from the 90′s and very current work with DC comics. Of course this is a collection of Lee’s works and does not in any way give any instructions on how to draw. It does how ever give insight into Lee’s passion for comic book work and gives a brief biography about how he came to be one of the most successful comic book artists of our time.

Inside the book you will find rough to finished art works, and some character design/remodel sheets and notes. This book gives a lot of insight into the way Lee works and what his mindset is and his determination. If you plan on trying to get into comic book art work, whether it’s pencilling, inking or coloring, its worth it to buy this book and best of all you can get it on Amazon.com!

And if you would like to get a SNEAK PEEK into the book by Jim Lee himself, you can check out the videos for SNEAK PEEK ONE and SNEAK PEEK TWO!

Just bear in mind if you are an aspiring artist, whether for cover illustrations or main comic book work, resources are important but a fearless and fool hardy attitude is what will really help you make it. Till next time, DRAW ON!

AW Movie Review: “Sucker Punch”

Posted by Christina Balian On March - 31 - 2011

Zack Snyder uses dark themes and opens “Sucker Punch” with a tragic look at why Babydoll’s (Emily Browning) life is such a mess. Her mother’s death has triggered a sequence of terrible events that includes her lecherous stepfather’s evil intentions to gain her mothers will, the “accidental” shooting of her little sister, and her new forced prison in a Vermont mental institution that prefers its crazies, be extreme beauties.

While in the institution Babydoll’s evil step father bribes a corrupt orderly (Oscar Isaac) to have his step daughter undergo a dangerous procedure which would have her lobotomized. Though still legal, lobotomies are rare and a special doctor must come to comelpete the procedure after a five day wait. During this time, Babydoll retreats to another dream world where all of her dreams play themselves out. In this world she meets four allies, Rocket (Jena Malone), Sweat Pea (Abbie Cornish), Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens), and Amber (Jamie Chung) who wish to gain freedom from an undercover brothel, which they where imprisoned in.

In order to escape, Babydoll comes up with a plan that required the group to get five items, which would give them their freedom. While dancing, Babydoll is able to distract the individuals with the specific items, while the girls plan to steal them unknowticed. In a trance, Babydoll enters another world which includes everything from battling giant samurais, fighting World War I zombie troopers, to alien robots and dragons. The graphics and sequences are stunning and very well done. “Sucker Punch” provides an interesting story with a meaning that demands other to keep fighting for what is right and what is freedom. The mystery and action in this movie is what causes the most thrilling atmosphere.

Though many did not enjoy this movie I have to disagree. I enjoyed watching women take a stand and fight for freedom and what they believed in. Every movie has some form or fan service these days and I can say I enjoyed the outfits for their unique looks and heavy artilery. I also enjoyed the graphics of the movie, I honestly just went to see “Sucker Punch” for the action and I got an amazing but misunderstood story.

I rate this movie a B+

AW Review: “Paul”

20110326 020529 AW Review: Paul

So I finally saw “Paul” this weekend. To be honest, I’m always weary of movies mixing live actors and animated characters. I had a chance to see this film about a month before it’s theatrical release and passed on it thinking it wasn’t worth leaving work early to see it at 3 in the afternoon by myself.

This low expectation really made the movie enjoyable. “Paul” was a fun ride for those that are socially awkward. With references to movies like “Star Wars” and “Back to the Future”, you really have to be on your A+ game in the world of geek to enjoy the humor in some cases. Let’s just put it this way, the opening scene is filmed at Comic Con in San Diego.Have I said enough?

“Paul” follows 2 SciFi nerds on their journey across America to all of the UFO hot spots (Area 511, Roswell etc…). Little did they know they would come across “Paul”.  An alien who was rough around the edges and trying to make his way back home (holy crap I just realized that it was a comedic, rated R version of “E.T.”). I’m typically not the biggest fan of Seth Rogan, but he really brought “Paul” to life. Simon Pegg does what he does best comidically and Nick Frost was…well, he gained weight.

This film certainly makes for a few laughs, has a decent story and will expose the geek in you. It is not for everybody but chances are, if you enjoyed “Shaun of the Dead” and “Hot Fuzz”, this movie is right up your alley.

Choose Your Character: Mortal Kombat Preview

Posted by Julian Nasserian On March - 26 - 2011

I know there are many gamers out there waiting to hear the words: “FINISH HIM!”, but you don’t have to wait much longer. With an April 19th release, the folks at NetherRealm Studios are slowly uncovering what is to become a Mortal Kombat, all-star line-up. Players will definitely not be limited as far as character selection and will even see some console-specific superstars. Watch this video to see who the special guest will be on the Playstation 3.

After playing the demo, which is limited to the selection of Mileena, Sub-Zero, Scorpion, and Johnny Cage, it becomes apparent that this is a new game with new features that still gives off that classic feel. We know that when we anticipate a Mortal Kombat game, that we can anticipate some blood and gore. There is no doubt that these features have not been used sparingly. Another addition to this version is the use of X-Ray moves. Once the player has filled their special bar, they have the ability to unleash a fierce combo that shows an x-ray view of the bones and organs that are affected by the move. You can download the demo on the Playstation Network and Xbox Live now.
