Out of respect to the victims of the shooting in Aurora Colorado, Sony, Fox, Disney, Universal, Fox, Paramount and Lionsgate had all agreed to back Warner Bros. by withholding box office numbers until today.

With reports of midnight numbers topping $30 million, it is now estimated that “The Dark Knight Rises” brought in about $161 million for the 3 day total which is below the estimated $175 million most likely due to the Colorado tragedy.

Competing for top Summer revenues against “The Avengers”, which brought in $207 million in its opening weekend, “The Dark Knight Rises” still fared well considering the fatal shooting in Aurora and its lack of a 3D release, which inflates ticket sales due to its heftier price.

It is likely that once move goers are more confident that the shooting was an isolated incident, they will be filling up seats in the next few weeks and a better forecast of the film’s revenue will be released.
