Angry Girl Of The Week: Kris Lee

It’s been a while since our last Angry Girl feature but now that we have finished some obligations and have worked out some new features that we hope to bring you this Fall, it’s time to get back to basics.

If you haven’t seen our feature before, we would like to introduce you to geeky girls who game, read comics, cosplay or take part in any other activity that may get them labeled as a nerd. Though pictures are always fun to look at, we feel the girl in the costume is more important than the costume itself so we include an interview in every feature.

Today we would like to introduce you to Kris Lee, a cosplayer who represents The League of Hot Geeks. Kris grew up watching anime as it was popularized during the after school Toonami hours. Kris and her boyfriend have a bit of an obsession with Deadpool and have even started a collection of action figures and other memoribilia.

Kris seperates her work life from her hobby life as she feels cosplaying for a living would take some of the fun out of it and we here at Angry Web solute her for that.

Age: 25

Tell us a bit about yourself:
My first nerdy obsessions started coming through when I was just a little girl. I watched tons of cartoons and Toonami was a huge part of my life at that time. Even now I still have a binder full of Dragon Ball Z trading cards. I started going to anime and comic conventions in 2010 and began cosplaying soon after. Being located right outside of Washington DC, I’m kind of in the sweet spot for east coast conventions. I’m half Korean and half Caucasian and when I’m not at work I cosplay like it’s my job.

What do you like to do for fun?
Right now cosplaying is my favorite hobby. I get a lot of enjoyment out of crafting and sewing, and I love the sense of accomplishment I get from finishing a costume or learning a new technique. My other nerdy hobbies include playing video games, reading comics and manga, watching anime and painting miniatures. Besides those things I also really like cooking, working out and practicing martial arts. I’ve been practicing Karate off and on for about 5 years and I think I’m pretty close to earning my black belt.

What do you want to do for a living?
Currently I work at my family owned grocery store as an assistant manager and I do small modeling jobs on the side. I’m actually quite content with my lifestyle and job and I can see myself doing this for a number of years to come. I don’t think I would ever want cosplay or modeling to be a full time career because it would take all the fun out of it. Right now it’s like my escape from the boredom of every day life and I don’t want that to change.

What type of video games, music, TV shows and movies do you like?
Open world RPGs are my favorite thing to play right now, Skyrim and Fallout 3 are top tier. When I was younger Spyro the Dragon games were my jam. I also really enjoy fighting games like Street Fighter and Soul Calibur; I currently have 5 Street Fighter costumes. I don’t listen to much music besides what’s on the radio but some of my Pandora playlists include Hall & Oates, Queen, N’Sync, and Disney movie music. Right now I don’t have cable at home so I watch a lot of anime on Netflix and Hulu. Some of the recent series I’ve watched are Blue Exorcist, Gurren Lagann, XXX Holic, and Digimon. I love martial arts and action movies, Donnie Yen is my favorite action movie star and whenever I watch one of his movies I’m always pumped to start training again.

What is your favorite comic book?
My current favorite comic series is Uncanny X Force. I also read anything Deadpool related because he’s my favorite character. My favorite Deadpool series, oddly enough, is Deadpool Pulp.

Tell us something interesting about yourself:
Ummm, that’s kind of a difficult question. My boyfriend and I probably have one of the most complete Deadpool collections around in terms of action figures, statues and memorabilia. We even have custom statues and a few doubles. I’m also a licensed massage therapist in Virginia.

Why do you decide to dress like the characters you portray?
I only pick characters to cosplay from series that I really enjoy. I take into account my body type and facial features to some extent and I also look at whether or not I like the actual costume. If I really like a character I will usually do more than one of their costumes. Sometimes I’ll cosplay a character I don’t really like just because I really want to make their costume. One of my cosplay goals is to make a new version Lady Deathstrike costume. I like Marvel comics and even though Lady Deathstrike isn’t one of my favorite characters that outfit needs to be done.

Anything else we should know about you?
I have a Facebook fanpage that I share with my boyfriend dedicated to all our cosplay and nerdy adventures. Please check it out if you get at chance. I don’t do commission work but I’m always open to answering questions and I like to hear constructive criticism and compliments from fans. I’m also a part of League of Hot Geek which is a great source for all things nerdy, please check them out and give their fan page a like too.
