Angry Girl Of The Week: Erica

Posted by Daniel Nasserian On September - 28 - 2011

x men phoenix by nemovalkyrja d486nw1 530x941 Angry Girl Of The Week: EricaThis week our girl of the week caught our attention with her portrayal of Phoenix from the Marvel Universe. Her interpretation of the character is absolutely stunning and there was no way we weren’t going to feature it.

On top of that, she has done an amazing job with the challenging KOS MOS character from the Xenosaga series. Erica’s classy style and classic beauty makes her extremely unique and her work will have you wondering how she was not allowed to celebrate Halloween as a kid.

Tell us a bit about yourself.
Like any other American, I grew up on video games, Anime and other nerd culture but bore a stronger interest in it than most. I’ve been attending conventions since 2003 and costuming since 2005. I’m quiet and introverted, so I’m happy being a wallflower – which is an unusual fit for such a boisterous hobby. When I first started making costumes and doing photography, I knew absolutely nothing. I think I’ve learned so much and gotten this far because of my curious and passionate personality.

Last year, I completed my duel Bachelor’s degrees in Japanese and Asia Studies and returned from living abroad in Kyoto, Japan. Currently, I work in an entirely different field: accounting.

What do you like to do for fun?
I picked up photography in 2010 and I absolutely love it. I also really enjoy cooking, making costumes, reading and playing video games.

What do you want to do for a living?
I think it would be enjoyable to be a professional photographer because it would be artistically fulfilling. But realistically, I don’t think I’d be happy making my hobby into a job. Anything that keeps me challenged and learning new things every day would be ideal.

What type of video games, music, TV shows and movies do you like?
The Metal Gear Solid series, Shadow of the Colossus, Odin Sphere, Metroid Prime, Okami, Red Dead Redemption and Assassins Creed are my favorite video games. I also really love old school games and puzzle games. Usually, if a game is unique and creatively designed I’ll fall in love with it.

As far as music goes – Nine Inch Nails, Imogen Heap, and VAST are my absolute favorites, if I had to pick. I collect trailer music too. Family Guy, Iron Chef, Star Trek TNG, various Anime (too numerous to list), the Deadliest Catch and House M.D are my favorite TV shows. My favorite movies are Gattaca, Legends of the Fall, Harry Potter, Forest Gump and Gone With the Wind.

What is your favorite comic book?
Uncanny X-Men Series

I wasn’t allowed to celebrate Halloween growing up.

Angry Girl Of The Week: Ann Marie

Our girl of the week this week caught my eye because you really don’t see a lot of cosplayers take on Cortana from the “Halo” series. Not only does Ann Marie do Cortana, but she has a bit of history with the character. Being able to show off her costume on stage at “Video Games Live” and being on the “Halo 3″ special features DVD is not an opportunity most people get.

Not only does she portray an amazing Cortana but she does great work in general whether it is a character from the “Final Fantasy” series or Jill Valentine from “Resident Evil”. Featuring Ann Marie this week as an Angry Girl is an honor and be sure to check out her website to see more of her amazing work.

Age: 27

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I have been cosplaying since 2002 and every year just gets better than the last. I am very fortunate to have met some amazing people at cons who have become very close friends of mine. My family loves Halloween so naturally they have always supported my love of costumes. Currently I live in Jacksonville with my boyfriend who is very supportive and even cosplays with me. I work at JoAnn’s where I am the supervisor of the fabric department, it’s the perfect job for me and I enjoy it there.

What do you like to do for fun?
I’m always sewing something so I keep myself busy with different craft projects. I like to get inspired by all the different fabrics I see coming into work. When I do take a break from sewing then odds are I’m on Xbox Live with my friends. Video games are a huge part of my life and I love chatting with everyone and gaming together in parties.

I also look forward to all the conventions I attend throughout the year. It’s an opportunity to meet up with friends from all over Florida and even some that fly in from out of state. To me a it’s a three day party to catch up with people and showcase my latest costumes.

What do you want to do for a living?
My dream job would be to make costumes for stage plays.

What type of video games, music, TV shows and movies do you like?
I’m a sucker for all the guilty pleasure reality shows out there. Of course I love Project Runway but I will admit to giving in to Jersey Shore. As far as games go I have a place in my heart for Uncharted, Halo, Gears of War, Resident Evil and Modern Warfare so I would have to say that I love shooter games. I enjoy all the Marvel movies out there but Tropic Thunder is definitely at the top of my list.

What is your favorite comic book?
My favorite comic book series would have to be Invincible Iron Man, the artwork and writing are just so so well done. Although if I had to pick my favorite graphic novel it would have to be Batman: The Long Halloween.

Tell us something interesting about yourself.
I love to cosplay from video games and I have had so many wonderful memories cospalying as Cortana. I have appeared on the special features DVD of Halo 3, and met Steve Downes, Master Chief’s voice actor, quite a few times. My greatest moment was at Comic Con 2008 where I had the opportunity to appear on stage as Cortana during the Halo set of Video Games Live. Words really can’t describe how amazing it was and it’s something that I will never forget.

Anything else we should know about you?
I’m a pretty down to earth person and I love being a nerd. I consider myself lucky to have such a wonderful family and great friends.

Angry Girl Of The Week: Karinna

IMG 5780 530x353 Angry Girl Of The Week: Karinna

I want to say I hate breaking up the cycle of having girls in costume at the top of this thread but the truth is…I don’t.

Karinna’s submission as our Girl of the Week is full of geeky goodness but what drew me to her was her classic pinup look. From her hair style to the lingerie she sports, Karinna mixes the appeal of Betty Page with the passion of a gamer and it’s simply irresistible.

Whether she’s dolled up as Misty from Pokemon or showing off her gaming tattoos in a sexy, vintage, photo shoot, Karinna falls into the category of “exactly what we’re looking for” in our girl of the week.

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I’m a pin-up/alternative/cosplay model, hair designer, makeup artist, writer, and violinist from Atlanta, Ga.

What do you do for fun?
I am a movie fanatic! I go to the movies all the time, especially for midnight premieres. I absolutely love going to concerts, too. Despite my busy schedule, I try my hardest to attend at least one show a month. Whether it’s a show that takes place at a huge amphitheater with thousands of fans or a tiny bar downtown, I am always up for a night of just relaxing with some friends and listening to great music. I love taking road trips to shows, too. I visited Chicago for the first time this year just to see one of my favorite bands play. I love going out to eat with friends, too; food is one of the greatest things of all time.  And, of course, I’m a nut for geeky conventions. I attended DragonCon for the first time this year and it was one of the best experiences I have ever had. I’m addicted.

What do you do for a living?
I’m a full-time hair designer 5 days a week. During the weekends I’m usually modeling for photo shoots. This year alone I have had the privilege of being published in multiple magazines, such as Retro Lovely, and internet blogs, such as Geeks Are Sexy. I recently started doing hair and makeup for shoots, as well.

What type of video games, music, TV shows and movies do you like?
I’m obsessed with Left4Dead on X-box. I even have Zoey tattooed on my right arm. I also love Nintendo 64 games such as Golden Eye, Mario Kart, and Banjo Kazooie. My favorite TV shows are Dexter, Scrubs, and Smallville. As far as movies, there are too many favorites to count; from Back to the Future to American Beauty to Moulin Rouge to Zombieland to Star Wars to Harry Potter.

As far as music goes, I have an open ear for just about anything. A few great bands that you should check out include Tommy and the High Pilots, Ludo, My Chemical Romance, and The Civil Wars. Being a violinist, naturally I adore classical music, too.

What is your favorite comic book?
My favorite graphic novels are Watchmen and The Umbrella Academy. I have tattoos from both of these, as well. I love The Walking Dead and Batman comics, too.

Tell us something interesting about yourself.
One of my greatest passions is writing. I have been writing anything from novels to short stories to poems since I was a little girl. One of my dreams is to one day become a published author. I would love to someday major in literature, as well. Call me a nerd, but I love going to school and being around an educational environment.

Anything else we should know about you?
I have a Facebook fan page where everyone can check out my latest photo shoots, convention adventures, and other exciting experiences!

Angry Girl Of The Week: Traci Hines

Posted by Daniel Nasserian On September - 7 - 2011

SSLocketship2 530x352 Angry Girl Of The Week: Traci Hines

The amount of talent that our Angry Girls have never cease to amaze me and this week is no exception.

Traci Hines is pretty well known for her portrayal of Ariel from “The Little Mermaid” on YouTube and there’s good reason for that. Whether it’s the fact that she has the look down to perfection or that she has the voice to back it up, Traci is a Disney Princess come to life.

I have always admitted that I’m a pretty big Disney fan, as you might remember from Courtney’s feature, and though I like to stick mainly to comic book cosplayers, I could not resist asking Traci to be our girl of the week this week. Her work is phenomenal and her story is an interesting one.

On top of that, Traci currently has a single that is currently available on iTunes entitled “Fantasy”. Due to Traci’s vocal talent, she is the first Angry Girl that will be featured with a YouTube video. Be sure to check out her YouTube page to see her cover some popular music and bring Ariel to life.

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I am a singer, songwriter, actress, voice actress, model, designer and cosplayer in Southern California

What do you like to do for fun?
I don’t have much down time these days, but when I do, I love going to Disneyland! I’m a big Disney nut so that’s always a favorite past time. My friends are the best, and I try to spend as much time with my friends and wonderful family as possible. I write music for a living and for fun, same with designing costumes and accessories…I’m very artsy, so most of what I do for fun and work ties in some way to being an artist. I also have the cutest cat on earth, Casper, so I spend a lot of time playing with him too!

What do you do for a living?
I’m living my dream! Everything that I do now is a passion, but music is where my heart truly lies, so whenever I get to do anything music-related for work, I feel even more blessed! As a recording artist, a dream of mine has been to tour with my music, and I’ve yet to realize that particular goal, so I hope to be able to do that sometime in the not so distant future.

What type of video games, music, TV shows and movies do you like?
I’m not much of a gamer, but I do love me some DDR! I also play Wii games and love old school Sega Genesis. I love all different genres of music, but the music I make is pretty top 40′s pop. Right now I’m particularly into pop, dance, synth-pop, rock-pop, electro..I’m loving artists like Lady Gaga, Lights, Katy Perry, Green Children, Sara Bareilles and Paramore. I grew up singing Blues and Jazz with my dad’s band. When I watch TV I  have a few guilty pleasures…Vampire Diaries, Pretty Little Liars, Hellcats and Gossip Girl. I’m also watching some shows on Netflix right now that crack me up…Psych and Reaper are the current shows on my queue. My favorite movies of all time are The Little Mermaid, Hook, Peter Pan, Chicago and Josie and the Pussycats.

What is your favorite comic book?
I don’t read typical comic books, but I love manga from Japan. Ai Yazawa and Yuu Watase are my favorite authors. I love Nana, Ceres, Absolute Boyfriend, Alice 19th, Princess Ai and so many others. I do love movies and tv shows based on comics though. I really loved the Batman/Superman Adventures and Batman Beyond. I’m such a dork!

Tell us something interesting about yourself.
Hmm…interesting? Well, if being a professional mermaid performer and princess doesn’t phase you, I guess I could tell you about my elbows that bend backwards, or the fact that I can juggle, and used to be a regular member of a juggling group that performed at juggling conventions? I also used to ride a unicycle, but I retired that hobby when I took a nasty fall and freaked out haha. I also am a singer with a hearing loss. Pretty weird huh? I had spinal meningitis as a kid and lost a percentage of my hearing. It affects me onstage sometimes to the point where I can’t properly hear my music. I’m actually looking into getting an in ear monitor and possibly a hearing aid in the future, but I refuse to let it affect my day to day life, and it certainly doesn’t stop me from singing, recording and performing for a living.

Anything else we should know about you?
I’d love for anyone reading to check out my single, Fantasy, on iTunes! It’s an original of mine, and my very first single. I’m recording my next single, Stay With You right now, and that should be out soon!

You  can get more Traci by checking out her website and deviantART page as well as following her on Twitter and Facebook. You can also support her arts by checking out her Etsy page and by buying “Fantasy” on iTunes.

Angry Girl Of The Week: Victoria

Posted by Daniel Nasserian On August - 31 - 2011

Crystal Ball by Lola Gainsborough 530x352 Angry Girl Of The Week: Victoria

We are happy to feature Victoria this week as our girl of the week because she has a way of standing out. Her costumes are not only phenomenal but there is a certain darkness to her that I absolutely love. Whether it is the black lipstick in some of her shoots or the macabre tone to others, Victoria goes from gothic princess to Disney princess in the blink of an eye. Her dark complexion and light eyes make Victoria an exotic beauty but let’s get down to the real reason she’s our Angry Girl this week…she’s a geek.

Victoria knows her comics and is a well rounded gamer. She has also been featured on G4 TV, in an advertisement for Dark Horse Comics, in Rolling Stone magazine and much more. She is a bit of a celebrity in her own right but by day teaches preschool. Victoria’s interview is an interesting read and we are proud to feature her as our Angry Girl of the week.

Angry Girl Of The Week: Meredith

Posted by Daniel Nasserian On August - 24 - 2011

meredithwitch3 X3 530x352 Angry Girl Of The Week: Meredith

This week, it is our pleasure to introduce you to Meredith, or as she may be known to her fans, “Ana Aesthetic”.

Meredith is a self proclaimed geek from Atlanta, Georgia who really stood out to me because not only is she and her costume work beautiful, but the photography is as well. Every photo we were sent is a piece of art in itself in which the colors, costumes and background tie into each other perfectly.

Like the other girls we have featured, Meredith comes off as an extremely sweet and humble gal who really knows her stuff when it comes to the geeky subculture that we here at Angry Web live to talk about.

I highly recommend checking out her website for more photos that are not featured below. I would feature them all if I could.

Angry Girl Of The Week: MeredithName: Meredith aka “Ana Aesthetic”

Age: 30

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I’ve been doing this whole cosplay thing since 1999, and can attribute my geekiness to my parents. Both worked in the computer field and weened me on Star Trek and Star Wars, comic books and Atari video games. I remember being the coolest kid on the block when I got my NES, which probably factored into why I was such a tom boy growing up – since all the boys wanted to hang out at my house! When I was 23 I quit my day job to go to fashion school, but all I did with that education is make costumes for me and my friends. At the time, I was co-host for a nationally syndicated pop culture (read nerd) talk show. It was a pretty dumb move of me to leave it but it also set me on the path where I am today, and I have to say my life is pretty awesome.

What do you like to do for fun?
I hate staying still for too long, so I’m always out and about doing things. Atlanta is full of great improv show and independent theater, which I frequent as often as I can. I also live with an artist, which means we’re always at some live art event or gallery opening. I love food. It’s like an obsession. My latest craze are the food trucks that I stalk incessantly and you can find me at most of their gatherings. If you’re in Atlanta, you totally need to check out the Howell Mill Food Park and the Atlanta Street Food Coalition.

What do you do for a living?
I don’t know why, but a lot of people assume I am a “professional cosplayer.” I have heard that term so many times in the past year that it’s made me want to rethink all of the cons I go to!

I’m a freelance news assignment editor, producer and booker for a major news network, writer and all around Lois Lane type. I started working on air in radio while I was still in high school and made the jump to TV news in my mid-20s. Some people will tell you I live the dream life, since I set my own hours and have the time (and money) to spend on my hobby… but don’t be fooled! Some months it’s like Christmas in July, but working freelance has taught me how to budget my money and save for the hard times.

I’m working on switching back to a more media personality type and am currently putting together a fresh demo and plan on shopping it around. So if you’re reading this and want an amazingly nerdy, super adorable and been in the profession for over a decade girl to host your geeky news segment, give me a call!

What type of video games, music, TV shows and movies do you like?
I used to be a bigger gamer than I am now, but for some reason working in TV makes me barely want to turn the thing on when I get home. I play a lot of PC games though, like Borderlands, Left 4 Dead, and Dragon Age. You can find me on Steam under AnaAesthetic. I’m really good with friendly fire ;D.

My taste in books and movies are all over the map. Cheesy sci-fi b-movies, independent flicks, avaunt guard art house films, things with lots of car chases and explosions. Currently I’m on a Haruki Murakami kick and absolutely LOVE The Wind-up Bird Chronicle. My favorite directors are Christopher Guest and Wes Anderson. DragonLance used to be my all time favorite fantasy novel, but after reading all the Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones) books in under two months, I have to say GRRM is a god-send to fantasy.

I also listen to everything under the sun. My favorite bands include Metric, Pink Floyd, Lady Tron and Kana.

What is your favorite comic book?
That’s like asking me which of my cats is my favorite! I don’t have just one. I’ve been a long-time X-Men reader and tend to pick Marvel over DC. I used to love Batman, but since the RIP run it’s been utter garbage. I guess none of that will matter come September anyways. Uncanny X-Men, on a whole, is always good. “God Loves, Man Kills” is one of the best comic stories written ever. I religiously follow DMZ, Green Lantern, Journey Into Mystery, X-Men (everything, even if it’s trash) and recently got into Captain America.

Why did you decide to cosplay as the characters you portrayed?
For the most part I pick characters I really like and want to bring to life. Every once in awhile I’ll see a design that interests me from a sewing challenge standpoint, and I want to make it. That usually involves me researching the comic/anime/movie/etc and immersing myself in it. Luckily I’ve ended up liking said characters. I don’t think I’d be able to put all the time and money into a costume of a character I didn’t like, just because they looked cool.

Anything else we should know about you?
I run a weekly video blog with my roomie and bestie about two of our favorite things: cupcakes and comic books. One day we’ll run out of cupcake places in Atlanta and figure we’ll have to move on to other things like: cheesecake, carnival food, Chianti… I mean, there are a lot of edible things that begin with the letter ‘C’!

Be sure to check out her YouTube channel and you can find her around the net on her website, on Facebook and on Twitter.

Also, if you happen to be attending Dragon Con, Meredith will be modeling at an art event Friday night, September 2nd, from 7:00PM – 11:30PM. People can sign up to draw along side artists like David Mack (Kabuki), James O’Barr (the Crow), Bill Sienkiewicz (Batman, Dare Devil) and Peter Steigerwald (Aspen Comics). She will also be debuting her Emma Frost costume at the show so be sure to check it out.

You can get more information on the Facebook event page.

Angry Girl Of The Week: Emily Rose

Posted by Daniel Nasserian On August - 17 - 2011

harley1 530x795 Angry Girl Of The Week: Emily Rose

We have been looking for the right girl to lead off with a Harley Quinn costume. We received a lot of submissions that you will most likely see down the road but Emily Rose has done things with the character that we felt was worth publishing early.

Her display of Harley in and out of costume brings some diversity to how playful the character really is. Whether it be lounging by the pool or roller skating with a giant mallet, Emily brings life to a character that deserves it.

One thing I realized about Emily early on is that she is not only creative but has a great sense of humor and comes off as extremely intelligent. It’s always nice to have a pretty face but at Angry Web, we also like a girl with brains (mmmm brains).

Without babbling on anymore, I proudly present to you Emily Rose. Be sure to check out the gallery below for all of her photos.

emily2 530x942 Angry Girl Of The Week: Emily RoseName: Emily Rose
Age: 18

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I’m a complete comic book geek and my comic book collection weighs more than I do. I was Suma Cum Laude for my graduating high school class and got a presidential academic scholarship to college, but I can’t do basic multiplication. I’m ridiculously random and sporadic and all over the place and basically nuts. I am extremely politically active in my community and spend the majority of my free time working for social change and advocating for reform. And, of course, cosplay is the entirity of my life. I absolutely adore it and I wouldn’t trade the experiences it has brought me for the world.

What do you like to do for fun?
I fangirl and I fangirl hard. In the past I have discovered an actor or actress whose work I particularly enjoy, and I will spend the next several weeks plowing through every film he or she has ever made an appearance in. I have done this with Anthony Hopkins, Helena Bonham Carter, David Tennant, and Cillian Murphy. My current project is Ralph Fiennes.

What do you want to do for a living?Next year I will be starting at Columbia College Chicago pursuing a major in visual art. After school I’d love to find a job doing advertising art direction, but it’s more likely that I’ll end up a starving artist living in a cardboard box. I embrace my inevitable future completely and openheartedly. Is it possibly to cosplay as a full time job?

What type of video games, music, TV shows and movies do you like?
I have pretty varied tastes. My favorite music ranges from Broadway star Patti LuPone to the always spectacular Lady Gaga. I religiously watch nerd classics like Doctor Who, but I secretly adore Jersey Shore. I love cult movies like The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Labyrinth, but I can never get enough of Harry Potter. But as far as video games go, I’m pretty much devoted to Mario. I grew up playing Super Mario on a Nintendo 64, and I can kick serious butt at Super Smash Brothers Brawl.

What is your favorite comic book?
I am very active on the DC side of the DC vs. Marvel debate. Specifically, though, my favorite comic book is the graphic novel Batman: Lovers and Madmen. The portrayal of Batman as a true detective with astute logical reasoning who employs the use of forensic skills is how I believe Batman should be personified as, but I rarely see this portrayed in comic books. Additionally, I find that when the relationship between Batman and the Joker is written as them being almost dependent on each other, their fight becomes so much more intriguing. Besides The Dark Knight, this graphic novel is the only time I have ever seen this particular aspect portrayed.

Tell us something interesting about yourself.
I happen to be extremely short. I’m exactly 4 ft 11, but I try to remedy this by wearing heels all the time. My heel collection ranges in heel size from four inches to ten inches.

Anything else we should know about you?
In my free time, I take orders, design, and sell custom made hand painted shoes. I sell them online so that I can afford to wear pants made entirely out of rubies and koala meat…. just kidding.

You can see more of Emily Rose’s work by following her at deviantART and check out her work on her Facebook page, you won’t be disappointed.
