Angry Girl Of The Week: Carla

Posted by Daniel Nasserian On February - 1 - 2012

untitled 16 Copy 2 530x351 Angry Girl Of The Week: Carla

Carla Dawn is another stunning girl who is featured on our 2012 calendar! If you couldn’t tell already, Carla is another one of our girls who is fond of the Disney Universe and even belongs to the Superhero Disney Princess Group.

Being a fan of Disney alone won’t make you geeky enough to be an Angry Girl but Carla’s hobbies include reading (a lot) books and comics as well as gaming. She has an amazing attitude and we’re not only happy to feature her this week, but we are honored to have her as Miss September on our 2012 Angry Girls calendar!

untitled 15 Copy 530x800 Angry Girl Of The Week: CarlaName: Carla Dawn
Age: 22

Tell us a bit about yourself.
Let’s see… I like to cosplay! I am a musician, a costumer, and a future teacher! I just graduated last month with a BA in Liberal Studies. icon biggrin Angry Girl Of The Week: Carla   I have super awesome friends and parents who I wouldn’t be able to make any of these costumes without. I also like to model on the side just for fun.
I love group cosplays, and I am a part of the awesome Superhero Disney Princess group that will appear again at SDCC 2012 I was Super Aurora (Sleeping Beauty) last year, and I will be Super Cinderella this year!!

What do you like to do for fun?
My current obsession is X-Men Destiny on Xbox 360… it rules my life. :p But I usually like doing arts and crafts with sparkly things (and usually have to do with making costumes). I love to play tennis and go for bike rides with the love of my life, and with my other friends I like to cosplay!! I also am a super book worm…when I get a chance to be alone, I love to catch up on my constant supply of new books.

What do you want to do for a living?
Right now I work in retail, making a living as I finish getting credentialed. My real goal is to be a kindergarten teacher! I have taught music to children in the past and tutored children in reading, and I know teaching is what I’m meant to do.

What type of video games, music, TV shows and movies do you like?
I am really open to anything except horror movies and I am terrible at first-person shooter games…I still can’t get the controls down!!! I absolutely love RPG’s, like Dragon Age, where you get to level up your character and earn new powers.

I love almost any type of music, but I’m really into the TRON soundtrack right now (my birthday is coming up and “The Princess and the Frog” soundtrack is on my wish list *hint hint!*).  I love pop, R&B, and Disney soundracks, mostly.

My favorite TV shows are Firefly, Chuck (last season… so sad), Teen Titans, Shin Chan, and American Dad. Anything that makes me laugh!! As for movies, my favorites are The Nightmare Before Christmas, Scott Pilgrim VS. The World, The Princess and the Frog, and Tangled!! I’m such a Disney fan. icon biggrin Angry Girl Of The Week: Carla

What is your favorite comic book?
I absolutely LOVE “The Guild” comics to death. I’m a super geeky fan about the show and whenever a new one-sot comic comes out, it’s my first priority to go buy it and read it. Felicia Day is a genius! I also adore the “Terra” mini-series by Jimmy Palmiotti, Justin Gray, and Amanda Connor. I have loved Terra’s character since I watched “Teen Titans” as a kid. As I got older, I started reading her story from when she was first introduced to the new Terra’s current story arc (and it continues in Power Girl). I just love that the old Terra’s story is so full of conflict for everyone and you never know what is going to happen next. Also, you can’t forget the Scott Pilgrim books… I thank my best friend for getting me into the series years ago. icon biggrin Angry Girl Of The Week: Carla

Tell us something interesting about yourself.
I recently cut my hair super boy short just to see what it would look like… I will never do it again. :p

Why did you decide to dress like any characters you portray?
Because it’s so much fun! Halloween has always been my favorite holiday, so it seemed like a fitting hobby; I get to dress up more than just one day of the year, and I get to dress up with groups of friends. I love to do group projects and cosplays… it makes all of the effort to make the costume worth it when you get to enjoy it with friends. I choose characters I adore, or at least find out about the character before I dress up as them. I have done costumes before where I didn’t know about the character beforehand because a friend wanted me to complete their group (Rainbow Dash, Panty), but I watched the show beforehand and fell in love with the characters.

You can find Carla Dawn on Facebook, deviantArt and on Cosplay.com.

Will the Xbox 720 be able to play used games?

Posted by Daniel Nasserian On January - 25 - 2012

xl Microsoft Xbox3602011 Vertical 624 530x298 Will the Xbox 720 be able to play used games?

There comes a time when all consoles reach the end of their tenure and we may be seeing the Microsoft Xbox 360 moving over and making room for its next-gen successor.

The rumor mill has been churning out news all day regarding the next console in Microsoft’s lineup, which has been tentatively named by the media as the Xbox 720. Though the specs are murky right now, sources have said that the new console will be sporting both DVD and Blu Ray capabilities (so HD DVD didn’t work out too well eh Microsoft?).

Also, according to the sources:

the next-generation Xbox will arrive in late-October or November 2013 packing a GPU modeled after AMD’s Radeon HD 6670 video card. That means DirectX 11 and 3D display support, as well as multidisplay output. 1080p too, but that should go without saying at this point. The new console is expected to be roughly six times more powerful than the Xbox 360 and “will yield 20 percent greater performance than” Nintendo’s Wii U.

It will also have smaller controllers (again?) and support a new version of the Kinect.

What has some people already sweating is that supposedly, the console will be unable to play used games. We already know that used game sales are a burden on publishing companies which is why we have seen such moves by companies like EA who required the multiplayer feature on “Battlefield 3″ to be purchased by a second hand owner.

Will Microsoft start treating their games like PC games where activation codes will have to be used? With media cracking down on piracy, the business model of GameStop maybe on its way out the door.

Dev kits will be sent out later this year and we will provide more details as they become available.

Angry Girl Of The Week: Murder Nurse

Danni, who is known to many as Murder Nurse, is a truly unique Angry Girl. Not only is she into cosplay but she is a burlesque dancer who adds a geeky twist to the profession. She had recently come out to Los Angeles to audition for the role of Juliet, of “Lollipop Chainsaw” fame, and as you can see in her photos, she is well deserving.

I am proud to say that Murder Nurse is one of 12 Angry Girls who are gracing our 2012 calendar. In an effort to help fund her recent trip out here, make sure to mention her name when buying a calendar which is now on sale.

IMG 9759 530x353 Angry Girl Of The Week: Murder NurseName: Murder Nurse
Age: 20

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I’m a burlesque dancer from South Jersey who specializes in geek themed performances. Some of my better known acts are “Bad Girl” from No More Heroes, “Babydoll” from Suckerpunch, “Catherine” from Catherine and “Battlesuit Jill Valentine” from Resident Evil 5. But I’ve also done Buffy themed acts as well as Silent Hill, Marvel, DC, Persona & my two latest acts I’ve been thrilled to debut being Lollipop Chainsaw & Skyrim! I’m also a model, singer, actress, writer – if there’s a stage or creative opportunity, you can find me there!

What do you like to do for fun?
Cosplay, of course! I get to become a character I admire and share that interest with others. Also, it’s almost like being an actor – living in another character’s shoes, so it’s a nice escape. What’s not to love? In my down time for enjoyment, I love playing survival horror video games, reading comics or romance novels, watching horror movies or going to goth clubs and losing myself in the night life and music with some friends. Anything I get to dress up for tends to be a good time for me.

What do you want to do for a living?
I want to be a performer. Typical aspiration of fame aside, I can’t imagine a life where I’m not entertaining in some way. Ideally, an actress or lead singer of a metal band would be a dream come true!

What type of video games, TV shows and movies do you like?
Survival horror video games are where I get my jollies, so Silent Hill, Fatal Frame and Resident Evil have always been favourites of mine [and we can't forget Amnesia: The Dark Descent - I even do an Amnesia burlesque act!]. No More Heroes is my favourite video game of all time – I’m Suda51 obsessed! And with that said, I enjoy me some Shadows of The Damned, as well as Catherine, Splatterhouse, Persona, Pheonix Wright.. I could go on. As for TV, I’m a HUGE Detective Conan fan. I could rewatch that series so many times. Same goes for Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Big Wolf On Campus. When it comes to movies, I typically go for anything horror but I do love a good werewolf movie when I can find one. My guilty pleasure is Alpha & Omega. Don’t hold it against me, those wolves are darn cute and you know it!

What is your favorite comic book?
Easily “The Evil That Men Do”. I love Black Cat – my favourite comic book character of all time! I also adore the Zenescope comics, especially Grimm Fairy Tales and the Wonderland series. Such great reads for people who love twisted fairy tales, horror & gorgeous girls.

Tell us something interesting about you.
What actually got me into writing was my hobby of roleplaying. I will roleplay with a friend of mine almost every day, because I love coming up with new characters and story lines. It’s amazing what the imagination can come up with, to where I’m no longer sitting on my laptop typing anymore but actually there, immersed in that plot, being that character I dreamed up. That’s why I started writing supernatural romance. It’s something I never get sick of doing and really enjoy.

Why did you decide to dress like any characters you portray?
I usually choose characters who I can relate to on a personal level but sometimes I choose them based on how much I admire them, like Black Cat for example. I don’t think I look like her, but she’s hands down one of my favourite cosplays because I have such a love for her character that I adore getting to portray that. It’s also fun just doing characters I can easily replicate. Part of the fun for me is trying to really bring that character to life, whether I help them step out of the comic or off the tv screen – it’s worth it when people get just as excited as me over seeing a cosplay they feel is almost like meeting the character in real life.

Anything else we should know about you?
I’m secretly a werewolf. Might explain what happened to all my missing ex-boyfriends, though…

Be sure to check out Murder Nurse on Facebook, Cosplay Burlesque, Weebly and view some of her sexy themed burlesque on YouTube.

“Avatar 2″ to be released in 2016?

Posted by Daniel Nasserian On January - 23 - 2012

avatar2 2016 530x385 Avatar 2 to be released in 2016?

Recent news has revealed that fans of James Cameron’s “Avatar” will have to wait 4 more years before being able to check out the sequel to the 2009 hit film.

Fans were told to expect “Avatar 2″ to hit theaters in 2014 and “Avatar 3″ in 2015. According to producer Jon Landau, that’s not the case and due to the use of new technology that will take the film to the next level, the time frame has be delayed to 2016.

Maybe they are just reviewing “Pocahontas 2″ for more story ideas.

Angry Girl Of The Week: Nina

Open My Eyes 530x374 Angry Girl Of The Week: Nina

It may be a few hours late but don’t think we’ve forgot about this week’s Angry Girl!

Nina compasses some great characters from the Disney Universe, Final Fantasy and even portrays Miss Martian from “Young Justice”…one of my personal favorites. She has a passion not only for cosplaying but loves to write horror stories and stay fit with some pretty active hobbies.

We are proud to announce that Nina is one of 12 Angry Girls featured on our 2012 calendar. Her selfless attitude, which is evident in her interview, has also led to an agreement between us and we will be donating up to $2 to the ASPCA for every calendar sold, in addition to our donation to the Red Cross. Just mention Nina’s name at the time of checkout and we will create a total which will be donated in her name.

nsheadshot aug2011 Angry Girl Of The Week: NinaName: Nina (“Sirene”)
Age: 19

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I’m a fashion business student living in downtown Chicago, although home is back in Michigan, so I’m split pretty evenly between the two. I’m a cosplayer primarily, although I also do some vlogging stuff here and there. I’m a TV addict, Caribou Coffee junkie, and corgi enthusiast.

What do you like to do for fun?
Aside from making costumes (because that’s pretty much a given), I love writing. I mostly write horror stories, as it’s my favorite genre. I’m also a health/nutrition/fitness freak, so I do a lot of running, dancing, weight lifting, skiing, pilates, and yoga. I love cooking and baking, too – I really enjoy trying new recipes and making dishes for special occasions, and something I’d like to do in the future is cake decorating. And I guess you could count “obsessing over fictional characters” as one of my favorite hobbies, haha!

What do you want to do for a living?
Ultimately I’d like to be a wedding planner for Disney Weddings, or run my own joint bridal boutique/wedding planning service. (What can I say, I’m a hopeless romantic!)

What type of video games, music, TV shows and movies do you like?
Like I mentioned, I love horror. Stephen King is my favorite author, with The Dark Tower series being at the top of my list. My favorite game series include Silent Hill, Metal Gear Solid, and Final Fantasy, although Skyrim is my current obsession! My favorite music artists are Mumford & Sons, Snow Patrol, and Florence + The Machine, but I love anything that has a folk/bluegrass feel to it.

As for TV shows, I’m pretty much addicted to Supernatural, Doctor Who, BBC’s Sherlock, and Young Justice. Primarily Supernatural though. And when I say “addicted” I mean it.

What is your favorite comic book?
I’m a huge Batman fan, but one of my friends made me read the Young Avengers series over the summer, and now I’m completely hooked! The original YA volume is probably my favorite of the series, just because I love seeing how the team came together, along with the backstory of the characters.

Tell us something interesting about yourself.
I’ve been cosplaying for five years now, and I don’t see myself stopping anytime soon! I mostly cosplay as anime and video game characters (although I prefer the latter), and lately I’ve been getting into Western comic/cartoon characters, too. I plan most of my costumes with my group of cosplay friends, Inner Mind Theater.

Anything else we should know about you?
I’m really passionate about animal rescue. This year I’m going to be volunteering with PAWS Chicago, which is the city’s largest No Kill humane organization. I know all of us nerds are tight on funds (especially us cosplayers!), but if you ever have a bit of extra cash, please consider donating to the ASPCA or another rescue organization. Every little bit helps, and if you have the choice between a new anime figurine or saving the life of an animal… Well, the figurine will be there tomorrow. The cat or dog you could have saved might not!

THE FIRE RISES! Thoughts on the TDKR Prologue

Posted by Eugene Wong On December - 15 - 2011

tdkr prologue 530x318 THE FIRE RISES! Thoughts on the TDKR Prologue

At the end of the Operation Early Bird viral marketing game, fans were rewarded with passes to see the 6-minute opening prologue to “The Dark Knight Rises” at select IMAX theaters across the world. T-shirts for Bane and Batman were passed out, which we’ve attached images of below.  AW was at the screening and we now have a summary along with our thoughts…

SUMMARY

The prologue begins with the reveal of a new logo, which appears to be a green-tinted web of shattered glass in the shape of the batsymbol. We then open to a memorial ceremony as Commissioner Gordon gives a eulogy to Harvey Dent. This is in standard widescreen format and looks as if it was filmed during The Dark Knight.

GORDON – I knew Harvey Dent. I was his friend. And it will be a very long time before someone inspires us the way he did. I believed in Harvey Dent.

Cut to IMAX. We float through a wheat field and zoom in on a jeep holding Dr. Leonid Pavel and three masked hostages. The jeep reaches an airplane as the hostages are met by a CIA officer. At first, he refuses to take the 3 hostages, but is then told they worked with the mercenary known as Bane. He admits the 3 hostages along with Dr. Pavel into the airplane and they take off.

Cut to what looks like a European mountain range as the plane drifts through the skies. The CIA officer says he will only take Dr. Pavel and the one hostage who tells him about Bane. He interrogates the first 2 by dangling them along the side of the plane, only to be interrupted by the 3rd hostage. A CIA agent unmasks the hostage revealing him to be Bane. The agent looks at Bane’s mask and asks him, “If I pull that off will you die?” Bane says, “It would be extremely painful…for you.” The agent then asks “Was getting caught part of your plan?” Bane answers, “Of course.”

A second plane flies overhead. The agent finally tells Bane, “Congratulations, you got yourself caught. Now what’s the next step of your master plan?” Bane replies, “Crashing this plane.” Within seconds, Bane’s henchmen have jumped onto the plane, bashed in the windows, attached cables to its sides, and broken off the wings. The tail then breaks off as the CIA agents hang on for their lives. Bane and his henchmen meanwhile take out a catheter and proceed to transfer blood from Dr. Pavel to a corpse inside a body bag. One of his henchman asks Bane, “Have we started a fire?” He replies, “The fire rises.”

Bane grabs Dr. Pavel and, gripping onto a cable, is hoisted out of the plane’s tail as they fly off with the second plane.

We then cut to a sizzle reel which shows Batman holding a new gadget (same one on the cover of Empire Magazine), Bane walking out into the snow with his henchman, the new ‘Bat-Wing’ chasing down a camo Tumbler, people rappeling down a well, a fight in the snow between Bane and Batman, a brief shot of Catwoman in full costume, Batman driving the Bat-Pod, a running shot of Officer John Blake (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), Selina Kyle in a car, mobs of people rushing down a street, Bane and a camo tumbler, and finally, an epic shot of Bane holding a broken batcowl. Fade to black.

OUR THOUGHTS?

In all honesty, I was initially more impressed by The Dark Knight prologue than this one as I felt there were more elements of surprise in the former. Make no mistake though – this was an incredible prologue and I now feel the need to watch it a second time in order to develop a better appreciation for it. Let’s face it, we have seen similar stunts like this before – the one major difference though is that this sequence was most likely done in real life, rather than behind a green screen or with CGI. Rethinking about the prologue with this understanding makes it loads more impressive and I can now say that this is definitely one of the most epic action sequences ever captured on film.

We did also see a similar sequence in The Dark Knight when Batman uses a skyhook to capture Lau out of his building, which might have been why I didn’t feel as surprised this time around. One theory that I’ve come across is that Bane may be learning off of Batman’s tactics or that it was actually Chris Nolan’s intention to mirror the two characters by hinting back to the skyhook scene. This subtle parallel adds a whole new depth to the sequence and may be foreshadowing the relationship between Batman and Bane.

While I didn’t think Bane’s reveal was as memorable as The Joker’s, I did feel the immensely threatening force behind the character. Tom Hardy’s transformation into the villain is quite stunning and you definitely see Bane as being an extremely powerful enemy, both intellectually and physically. The mask is far more frightening than what we’ve seen in photos and almost evokes a Hannibal Lecter-like presence for the character. One thing to especially note is when Bane tells one of his henchman, “The fire rises”, and we see the henchman respond with a look of elated glory and excitement on his face – this is quite a disturbing image, seeing as this is moments before he’s about to martyr himself for their cause. It also indicates how deadly of an influence Bane really is.

Another interesting point I found was from the blood transfer. What I came to understand was that Bane was transferring Dr. Pavel’s blood into the corpse so that in the plane’s wreckage, forensics would discover the blood and believe Dr. Pavel to have been in the crash. From the staggering height the plane fell from, everything would have been completely destroyed, including the corpse, which would as a result, scatter the blood throughout the wreckage. Any other theories? Feel free to chime in.

As for the sizzle reel, I think it annihilates all the behind-the-scenes footage we’ve seen so far. The film looks gorgeous – especially the exterior action shots in the snow. Catwoman looks amazing, the Bat-Wing looks amazing…let’s face it, this is going to be a damn amazing film and this prologue has more than proved it. July 20th, 2012 can’t come soon enough.

*By the way, notice how we didn’t even address Bane’s inaudible dialogue – which many news sites seem to be making a bitching fiasco of. Chris Nolan has already spoken out on the issue and that it will be fixed during the postproduction process. I, personally, didn’t mind it as I thought Bane’s muffled voice actually added more mystery to the character. It almost made him seem more animalistic and unhuman, and therefore, more frightening.

The prologue will be shown in IMAX screenings of Mission Impossible:Ghost Protocol this coming weekend, so be sure not to miss it!

AW Game Review: Batman: Arkham City Lockdown

Posted by Daniel Nasserian On December - 12 - 2011

photo 2 530x352 AW Game Review: Batman: Arkham City Lockdown

“Batman: Arkham City Lockdown” was released last week and what kind of fan would I have been if I didn’t purchase it?

BACL is a fighting game with a bit of a twist. You control the dark knight through various parts of Arkham City using your fingers to throw punches, block incoming attacks and counter punches. There are no actually control schematics but rather you control your moves by swiping your fingers in different directions.

The controls are a bit clumsy but the game is simple enough where it doesn’t matter too much. Once you complete stages, you will be awarded XP which can be used to upgrade equipment and other stats in order to progress through the game. Once you have finished different waves of enemies, you will unlock a boss battle that you must complete to open the next playable section of Arkham City.

The graphics are extremely fluid and look great for a game that can be played on a mobile device. The gameplay itself is nothing to write home about but it is certainly a nice complimentary game to BAC. The price is a bit steep at $5.99 for what the game actually entails but Batman fans will enjoy it as it puts the Batman Universe in your pocket.

The photos below are actually screenshots from the game and will give you an idea of what the fights, bosses and navigation menu look like. You can also download a costumes pack that will unlock the same skins that were released on the game’s console counterpart.

“Batman: Arkham City Lockdown” is out now for the iPhone and iPad and be sure to check the specs to see if your device can run it.

“The Dark Knight Rises” viral begins this Friday!

Posted by Eugene Wong On December - 8 - 2011

TDKR poster 530x356 The Dark Knight Rises viral begins this Friday!“The Dark Knight” introduced one of the most engaging and memorable viral marketing campaigns that kept die-hard fans on the edge of their seats for months leading up to its release. With “The Dark Knight Rises” coming out next summer, fans were eagerly waiting to see how the marketing for this next installment would top off that of its predecessor, if at all. Recalling way back to 2007, “The Dark Knight” campaign had begun on Halloween, yet this time for “The Dark Knight Rises”, nothing happened. Sure, a twitter account called @thefirerises was released that led to official photos of Bane and Catwoman over the summer, but after the enormous success of the 2nd film, was a marketing campaign really worth the studio’s investment? Probably not – however, the film has likely been projected to reel in another $1 billion worldwide regardless, so why not spend a measly portion of that for the die-hard fans? And it looks like the studio has cooked something special up indeed! We will do our best to cover the events of this campaign so let’s get this ball rolling…and here…we…go!

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES VIRAL CAMPAIGN

12/7/11 – Wired and Empire Magazine unveil two “leaked” CIA documents both concerning a missing Russian nuclear scientist named Dr. Leonid Pavel – documents attached below. The first document is a profile of the scientist and the second, a transcribed conversation between “MILITIA” and an unknown party. It wasn’t entirely certain at the time whether this was relevant to TDKR, but the photograph of Dr. Pavel, played by actor Alon Aboutboul who is known to be in the film, practically confirms it. As much as fans have tried to draw away any hidden messages in the documents, nothing has come up.

12/8/11 – A third CIA document is tweeted by account @thefirerises, announcing an “Operation Early Bird” that will commence tomorrow (Friday) morning at 10 am PST.  Document below.  A countdown timer can be seen at http://www.operationearlybird.com.  Be sure to check the site tomorrow and stay tuned!

12/9/11 – At 10 am, http://www.operationearlybird.com, is activated to show a world map where GPS coordinates can be entered.  Heading over to http://www.thedarkknightrises.com, an audio track of a woman reading off coordinates is heard.  The coordinates are entered into the Operation Early Bird site to reveal IMAX theater locations holding free advance screenings of the prologue the following Tuesday.
