“DoubleCrossed” – a short film

Posted by Eugene Wong On February - 25 - 2012

Greetings, fellow geeks! This is Eugene Wong, one of AW’s writers, and I’m here to present a short film I’ve been working on for almost half a year now. A little backstory – I started a film studio from scratch in the back of my apartment and pretty much produced my first short film as a one-man crew. The film is titled “DoubleCrossed” and can best be described as an action crime thriller. Lots of lessons were certainly learned from this experience, and believe me, this is only the beginning of many other projects I have in mind for the future. Attached below are also some posters my editor and I had made to spark a little buzz on the project.

Anyways, enjoy the film! Comments, likes, and dislikes are welcome icon smile DoubleCrossed a short film

AW Music Review: fun. – Some Nights

Posted by Daniel Nasserian On February - 23 - 2012

fun album 530x530 AW Music Review: fun. Some Nights

This week, the band fun. released their new album “Some Nights” to much acclaim. Some of you may be familiar with fun. as their debut title, “Aim and Ignite” was released in 2009 and some of you may go back even further and remember front man, Nate Ruess’s, previous band The Format. Others may have just found out about the group recently by their song “We Are Young” which graces the airwaves and iTunes (currently number 2 most downloaded) or from the Chevy commercials.

I got into The Format back in the early 2000s when I saw them promoting their debut album, “Interventions + Lullabies”, at a local club here in Los Angeles. I immediate fell in love with their pop melodies and ability to write and compose music. After some issues with their record label, the released a second full length album entitled “Dog Problems” which was orchestrated better than their debut record and even more catchy.

Once The Format disbanded, I was pleased to hear Nate would be returning for another project with a new group and I was a fun. fan the minute I heard their songs up on MySpace prior to being officially released. fun.’s debut album, “Aim and Ignite”, leads off with the song “Be Calm” which set the tone for the whole album. The musicianship that went into that song including everything from violins to theremins truly set it apart from other pop/rock songs on the market and fun. had an identity that was unrivaled. With a mini orchestra backing the song and some amazing crescendos that highlight Nate’s vocal talent made it one of may favorite albums in the past 5 years.

The reason I am backing this review with some history is because everything that made me love The Format and fun. in the past seems to have disappeared from their new album, “Some Nights”.

“Some Nights” may be a hit on the radio and have commercial play but anyone who has followed Nate’s musical projects know that this is least creative album that he has put out. It’s short sighted appeal to the hipster crowd will work towards making fun. a forgettable band in the future which is sad considering how much talent the group truly has. Angry Girl Of The Week: Crystal

Posted by Daniel Nasserian On February - 22 - 2012

1942 Cammy by onpaperwings 530x353 Angry Girl Of The Week: Crystal

This week’s Angry Girl is a special request from Daniel over at Collector’s Paradise. Crystal is a popular cosplayer who is featured in our 2012 Angry Girls Calendar. We had many inquiries as to why Crystal hasn’t been featured on our site yet and the answer is…there is no good answer.

Crystal does some amazing high end costumes that come mostly from popular video games like “Street Fighter” and “Metal Gear Solid”. She loves what she does and is extremely good at it. Be sure to check out her website, linked below, to see more of her amazing work.

me Angry Girl Of The Week: CrystalName: Crystal Graziano aka “Precious”
Age: 22

Tell us a bit about yourself.
When I was really young, my uncle sent me an NES for Christmas, so I basically grew up with video games. I played a lot of JRPGs when I was around ten years old, and the art style led me to be interested in anime and manga. San Diego Comic Con happens to be pretty close to me, and my parents were Trekkies, so I was able to convince them to take me so I could look for merchandise of my favorite series. That’s where I was really first exposed to cosplay, and I tried it out a few years later when I was 15. It was really a good creative outlet for me, and it’s how I met my husband, as well as many close friends!

What do you like to do for fun?
In my free time I’m usually sewing. I’m a big fabric nerd, and I really like to go to the LA fashion district with friends and look at all the different fabrics.  When I’m not doing that, I like playing games or dabbling in drawing and sculpting. I also really enjoy cooking when it’s not too hot out.

What do you do for a living?
I’m currently a full time art student. My husband is really into costuming too, so he’s happy with me not working while I’m in school so that I can make more costumes. When I graduate, I plan on pursuing a creative career of some kind. I’d really love to do costuming or special effects professionally, but I’m realistic that it’s a hard industry to break into. I really just want to do something creative!

What type of video games, music, TV shows and movies do you like?
My favorite game series is Metal Gear, hands down. I’m guilty of replaying the games over and over rather than branching out to a new game on my to-do list. As far as movies go, I like cyberpunk like Blade Runner and Fifth Element quite a bit. There’s something about the atmosphere of both movies that I really love. I don’t watch much TV, but I do follow Grey’s Anatomy and Project Runway. My taste in music is pretty diverse and arguably pretty terrible, and it ranges from soundtracks to Lady Gaga.

What is your favorite comic book?
I only occasionally read comics, but of the ones I’ve read, Watchmen is my personal favorite. The characters are really well-developed and believable, the story is great, and there are so many subtle details hidden in the artwork, and it makes it worth re-reading over and over. On a more lighthearted note, Deadpool is pretty hilarious!

Why did you decide to cosplay as the characters you portrayed?
With very few exceptions, I’m simply a fan of that character. I find that I’m usually drawn to strong women who can hold their own rather than the damsel in distress, and my choices in costumes reflects that. Helpless girls are just so uninteresting! Body type and facial shape are also important factors to consider, and I usually stay away from very young or short characters because of that.

Anything else we should know about you?
If you have any specific questions on how I made a costume, I’m always happy to help fellow cosplayers!

“The Simpsons” gears up for its 500th episode

Posted by Daniel Nasserian On February - 8 - 2012

Simsons Red Carpet 19 530x310 The Simpsons gears up for its 500th episode

Today, in the heart of Hollywood, cast members of “The Simpsons” showed up to promote this Sunday’s 500th episode. There was a bit more to this meet and greet however as 100 die-hard “Simpsons” fans showed up to help smash a Guinness World Record of consecutive television watching.

The contestants were made comfortable inside a massive yellow tent that would be showing all 500 episodes of the hit show. These crazed couch potatoes will be given 3 meals a day and snacks to sustain them as well as a 10 minute break for every 2 hours they spent in their chairs. Sounds easy enough right? Well not so much.

The contest started at 5:00pm PST and given the 20 minute episodes, commercial free of course, the contestants will be forced to skip REM sleep until about Sunday morning. Judges will be disqualifying anyone who nods off or takes their eyes off the screen for longer than a sneeze.

We will update this post over the next couple of days with some of the results but if you’re like us normal folks, you’ll just be watching “The Simpsons” 500th episode from the comfort of your own home, after a full night’s sleep, this Sunday night on FOX.

Be sure to check out our interviews with Al Jean, Nancy Cartwright and Yeardley Smith on the podcast! Also, check out Yeardly Smith’s line of shoes which will be sold on Zappos in the coming weeks.

Also, a huge thank you to Steve Siebold for photographing the event.

This week we are proud to feature Shannon (AKA Sushi SunDae)! Shannon is another Angry Girl with a great vintage style reminiscent of Magenta Costly.

This classic beauty is also a force to be reckoned with when it comes to the fierce sport of…bowling. She recently bowled a 300 which is bowler lingo for a perfect game.

Angry Girl Of The Week: Carla

untitled 16 Copy 2 530x351 Angry Girl Of The Week: Carla

Carla Dawn is another stunning girl who is featured on our 2012 calendar! If you couldn’t tell already, Carla is another one of our girls who is fond of the Disney Universe and even belongs to the Superhero Disney Princess Group.

Being a fan of Disney alone won’t make you geeky enough to be an Angry Girl but Carla’s hobbies include reading (a lot) books and comics as well as gaming. She has an amazing attitude and we’re not only happy to feature her this week, but we are honored to have her as Miss September on our 2012 Angry Girls calendar!

untitled 15 Copy 530x800 Angry Girl Of The Week: CarlaName: Carla Dawn
Age: 22

Tell us a bit about yourself.
Let’s see… I like to cosplay! I am a musician, a costumer, and a future teacher! I just graduated last month with a BA in Liberal Studies. icon biggrin Angry Girl Of The Week: Carla   I have super awesome friends and parents who I wouldn’t be able to make any of these costumes without. I also like to model on the side just for fun.
I love group cosplays, and I am a part of the awesome Superhero Disney Princess group that will appear again at SDCC 2012 I was Super Aurora (Sleeping Beauty) last year, and I will be Super Cinderella this year!!

What do you like to do for fun?
My current obsession is X-Men Destiny on Xbox 360… it rules my life. :p But I usually like doing arts and crafts with sparkly things (and usually have to do with making costumes). I love to play tennis and go for bike rides with the love of my life, and with my other friends I like to cosplay!! I also am a super book worm…when I get a chance to be alone, I love to catch up on my constant supply of new books.

What do you want to do for a living?
Right now I work in retail, making a living as I finish getting credentialed. My real goal is to be a kindergarten teacher! I have taught music to children in the past and tutored children in reading, and I know teaching is what I’m meant to do.

What type of video games, music, TV shows and movies do you like?
I am really open to anything except horror movies and I am terrible at first-person shooter games…I still can’t get the controls down!!! I absolutely love RPG’s, like Dragon Age, where you get to level up your character and earn new powers.

I love almost any type of music, but I’m really into the TRON soundtrack right now (my birthday is coming up and “The Princess and the Frog” soundtrack is on my wish list *hint hint!*).  I love pop, R&B, and Disney soundracks, mostly.

My favorite TV shows are Firefly, Chuck (last season… so sad), Teen Titans, Shin Chan, and American Dad. Anything that makes me laugh!! As for movies, my favorites are The Nightmare Before Christmas, Scott Pilgrim VS. The World, The Princess and the Frog, and Tangled!! I’m such a Disney fan. icon biggrin Angry Girl Of The Week: Carla

What is your favorite comic book?
I absolutely LOVE “The Guild” comics to death. I’m a super geeky fan about the show and whenever a new one-sot comic comes out, it’s my first priority to go buy it and read it. Felicia Day is a genius! I also adore the “Terra” mini-series by Jimmy Palmiotti, Justin Gray, and Amanda Connor. I have loved Terra’s character since I watched “Teen Titans” as a kid. As I got older, I started reading her story from when she was first introduced to the new Terra’s current story arc (and it continues in Power Girl). I just love that the old Terra’s story is so full of conflict for everyone and you never know what is going to happen next. Also, you can’t forget the Scott Pilgrim books… I thank my best friend for getting me into the series years ago. icon biggrin Angry Girl Of The Week: Carla

Tell us something interesting about yourself.
I recently cut my hair super boy short just to see what it would look like… I will never do it again. :p

Why did you decide to dress like any characters you portray?
Because it’s so much fun! Halloween has always been my favorite holiday, so it seemed like a fitting hobby; I get to dress up more than just one day of the year, and I get to dress up with groups of friends. I love to do group projects and cosplays… it makes all of the effort to make the costume worth it when you get to enjoy it with friends. I choose characters I adore, or at least find out about the character before I dress up as them. I have done costumes before where I didn’t know about the character beforehand because a friend wanted me to complete their group (Rainbow Dash, Panty), but I watched the show beforehand and fell in love with the characters.

You can find Carla Dawn on Facebook, deviantArt and on Cosplay.com.
