AW Movie Review: The Muppets

the muppets disney logo 530x220 AW Movie Review: The Muppets

The Muppets have been pretty obsolete for many years now so it was tough getting motivated to make the trip to the theater to check this one out. I have always been a fan of Disney and knowing that Jason Segel had written it and Brett McKenzie (Flight of the Conchords) had done the music, I knew there would be something special about this movie.

“The Muppets” pokes fun at itself in a way by playing on the fact that they are no longer relevant. The plot of this movie centers around Gary (Jason Segel) and his puppet friend Walter. When Walter takes a tour of the Muppet’s studio and overhears a plan to tear it down so an oil tycoon can tap into the land’s resources, he finds Kermit the Frog in an effort to round up the Muppets to put on a show and raise $10 million to save the studio.

Now I know that doesn’t sound like the most original plot on paper but by following Kermit on his journey to pick up the characters that either brightened your childhood, or will be sure to brighten your child’s childhood, you will find yourself pleasantly surprised at this charming film.

The writing was absolutely fantastic and “Flight of the Conchords” are all over the musical sequences. The reviews of this film speak for themselves and with “Hugo”, “Arthur Christmas” and “Twilight” giving you choices for holiday moviegoing, do yourself a favor and see “The Muppets” the first chance you get. No matter what age you are, it will have you laughing and I challenge you to leave the theater without one or two of the musical numbers stuck in your head.

Angry Girl Of The Week: Jenna

Jenna Modified Dolls 098 530x352 Angry Girl Of The Week: Jenna

As we’ve said before, you don’t have to wear a costume to be considered an Angry Girl. In fact, you just have to be on the geeky side of the social spectrum. I can’t think of anything geekier than spending your free time reading up on astronomy and physics and that’s exactly what this week’s girl does with her free time.

Jenna is a mother of two who loves to shoot guns, spends time doing charity work and has a degree in Software Engineering. For the first time in the feature’s history, our Angry Girl aspires to work for NASA and we here at AW salute her for it.

Jenna Modified Dolls 041 530x743 Angry Girl Of The Week: JennaName: Jenna
Age: 25

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I am a wife and stay-at-home mother of two boys, 3-years-old and 6-months-old. At this point in time, I am focusing on my family because I was the working mom for 3 years so now I am trying to play catch up. I have also starting becoming involved with The Modified Dolls and various charities. My causes include Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and Asperger’s Syndrome because I identify with these.

What do you like to do for fun?
Aside from family time, I enjoy going shooting at the indoor range nearby. Weapons, especially firearms, are one of my obsessions at the moment. Right now I am really into AR-15s and have had the opportunity to shoot some pretty badass AR-15s the last few times I’ve gone shooting. Soon, I will most likely be investing in a Glock 17 9mm because I am pretty accurate with these and they are relatively affordable, although my favorites are Sig Sauers! Another one of my hobbies is Astronomy so I am always sucked into reading about anything related to Astronomy or Physics. I also enjoy skateboarding and running.

What do you want to do for a living?
I would love to be a stay-at-home mother to my boys forever if they never grew up, but I did earn my BSIT in Software Engineering. As much as I love repairing computers or programming, my passion is really Astronomy. My dream job is to do research for a university or NASA. Luckily, having a Software Engineering degree may actually help me get there someday.

What type of video games, music, TV shows and movies do you like?
I used to love MMORPGs when I was younger but I suppose I have grown out of that. The huge dork that I was (and probably still am), I used to be completely absorbed in a silly game called Runescape. These days I tend to go more for FPS games. Right now I’m REALLY digging Resistance 3. I also love to play WolfTeam which is a free online MMOFPS. Highly suggested if you like free online PC games!

My favorite types of music are reggae, ska and punk (in that order). I also love classic rock and oldies. Some of my favorite bands right now are Rebelution, The Green, Iration, The Optimators. I will always love Save Ferris.

If there’s one thing I love it is anime. Anime is seriously crack for me. Once I finish a whole anime series, I have to find another before I go insane. Some of my favorites are Death Note, Paranoia Agent, Hell Girl, High School of the Dead, Avatar the Last Airbender, FLCL, Witchblade, Rin: Daughters of Mnemosyne and Girls Bravo. I also love anything that is sci fi or fantasy. I love Firefly and Lexx. Any alien movies. I just watched Fire in the Sky for the first time so that was pretty cool. Last but not least, I love martial arts movies. I love most Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan and Jet Li movies. I also discovered Ip Man recently and love that guy too!

What is your favorite comic book?
Sadly, I don’t often read comic books too often anymore. However, growing up I really enjoyed The Swamp Thing. I used to read those like crack since there were a ton of them laying around our house. I do love manga and loved Death Note. I also enjoy reading sci fi and fantasy books. My favorite authors are Ray Bradbury and Orson Scott Card. I LOVE the Ender’s Game series.

Tell us something interesting about yourself.
I’m an avid Carl Sagan fan. I dream in numbers and programming languages. I know English, French, Spanish and Farsi (I’m half Iranian). I think that’s about as interesting as I get lol.

Anything else we should know about you?
I am going to try out cosplay soon. Also, feel free to add me on Facebook or find The Modified Dolls page to support various charities by seeing sexy tattooed ladies in the mag every month!  icon smile Angry Girl Of The Week: Jenna

“The Dark Knight Rises” to take place 8 years after “The Dark Knight”

Posted by Daniel Nasserian On November - 22 - 2011

DSCF5516 X3 530x706 The Dark Knight Rises to take place 8 years after The Dark Knight

In the latest issue of Empire Magazine, some details were given in regards to the time frame of “The Dark Knight Rises”. When we last left The Dark Knight, he told Commissioner Gordon that he would be what Gotham needed him to be. Leaving Harvey Dent to die a hero, Batman fled from the scene and left us with nothing more than the end credits.

In an interview with Empire, the film’s director, Christopher Nolan, explained where TDKR would begin:

It’s really all about finishing Batman and Bruce Wayne’s story. We left him in a very precarious place. Perhaps surprisingly for some people, our story picks up quite a bit later, eight years after The Dark Knight. So he’s an older Bruce Wayne; he’s not in a great state.

For those of you who have followed the comics, Bane wasn’t just a brute who used toxins to boost his physical state, but an extremely intelligent being who was able to break Batman both physically and mentally.

Tom Hardy discussed a bit about Bane in his interview with Empire and the brutality that went along with the character:

Anything from small-joint manipulation to crushing skulls, crushing rib cages, stamping on shins and knees and necks and collarbones and snapping heads off and tearing his fists through chests, ripping out spinal columns. He is a terrorist in mentality as well as brutal action.

With the evidence provided, what can we expect from Nolan’s final installment of the Batman franchise? Will we see Bane leaving a tired and deflated Batman left to die? Will Nolan’s Batman separate itself from the other series for a definitive ending?

Let us know what you think in the comments below!

Angry Girl Of The Week: Courtney

IMG 2343 530x795 Angry Girl Of The Week: Courtney

Since we started the Angry Girls feature, we have met some wonderful and talented girls who are extremely passionate about their craft. What surprised me the most was how friendly the girls were. They were all happy to participate and took the time out of their lives to answer our questions and email their photos.

This week’s selection, Courtney, embodies all of the qualities I mentioned and then some. I had the pleasure of meeting Courtney at the Comikaze Expo in Los Angeles just over a week ago and we ended up using her photo in last week’s collaborative feature. Looking back, I liked her work so much that I asked her to do a full feature. Since then, her rendition of Marvel’s Rogue has been featured on Reddit and I am truly excited to share her work with our readers.

IMG 1435 530x598 Angry Girl Of The Week: CourtneyName: Courtney aka Supa Tuna
Age: 21

Tell us a bit about yourself.
Well there is so much to say. I’ve been cosplaying for about 7 years going on 8 now. I’ve made approximately 50 + costumes and outfits and attend several conventions a year. I was raised in the geek world by my dad, he was the major nerd on the block before he met my mom. My life was surrounded by Star Wars, Star Trek, comic books, collectibles (that quickly turned into toys for my sisters and I), and several cartoons. I was always encouraged by my parents to be different and step outside the boundaries, which was probably why I was the only kid in 4th grade who had read The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings trilogies (thanks to my mother’s geek streak). In high school I was president of our Anime and Comic club and I organized several events for members to attend or perform at. When I graduated from high school I pursued college briefly and pursued cosplay a bit more seriously with the help of some friends. Every year I’ve tried to improve my skills more and more as a cosplayer and have met so many inspirational people along the way.

What do you like to do for fun?
For fun I usually like to read comics, play video games and watch movies. I’m also quite an extensive blogger. I love to express my inner fantard and converse with fellow nerds on the web. When I’m not at home, I’m going to an event or hanging out with my incredible friends, who are just as nerdy as myself.

What do you do for a living?
Currently I work for a family business. I’m full time as a secretary. It’s not the most exciting work but it certainly pays the bills and for the time being, really helps my family out with running the business. Sooner or later though I do plan to spread my wings and expand my talents into the fashion world. I have a passion for hair and makeup and will hopefully be able to get started into a career that I would prefer to expand in.

What type of video games, music, TV shows and movies do you like?
As far as games go I love Role Playing Games. I get sucked into those easily and spends days completing them once I’m hooked. However I love playing video games with my sisters so every now and then a multi player game is preferable to me.

When it comes to films I am an avid horror film fan. I’m always going to the theater with my best friend to see the next scary flick. I adore science fiction films and action as well. I always get excited seeing amazing special effects and creative story lines. I’m obsessed with crime television and watch several shows related to the genre. I love getting invested into tv series and often spend my time watching the newest episode of my current obsessions.

My taste for music isn’t picky at all. I love to listen to anything that is appealing to me, wether it’s the beat, lyrics, or melody. I have always been a huge supporter of the British band “The Gorrilaz” and several other amazing artist out there.

What is your favorite comic book?
I’m such a big fan of so many comics out there. I typically prefer Marvel comics over DC. The only series I pursued in the DC verse was Batman, since he had always been a childhood favorite. However if I have to choose a super series, I’d have to pick the X-Men. They have always been my heroes thanks to my dad. Deadpool is a personal favorite and quite recently I’ve been investing more into Thor and Captain America.

Why did you decide to cosplay as the characters you portrayed?
Most characters I choose because I feel some sort of connection or relate strongly to them. Most characters are my personal favorites or ones I fall in love with. I can’t really see myself cosplaying a character I don’t feel connected to in some way. To me it would feel like squeezing into the wrong skin and would be hard for me to convey the emotions correctly. Thankfully I have yet to cosplay a character I haven’t loved which has been a blessing. icon smile Angry Girl Of The Week: Courtney

Anything else we should know about you?
I’m extremely friendly. Quite honestly I’m a very introvert and shy personality, but if I’m approached by people I always am as polite and friendly as can be. I will take photos with anybody who is willing to be in a picture with me. I dress up to meet fellow nerds, geeks, and freaks like myself. I’m a fan, just as much as the next person.

You can find Courtney’s work around the net on Facebook, Tumblr and deviantART.

AW Game Review: Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3

Posted by Daniel Nasserian On November - 15 - 2011

ultimatemarvelvscapcom3 530x264 AW Game Review: Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3

If it seems like yesterday you were getting excited about the long overdue sequel to “Marval Vs. Capcom 2″, that’s because it was only released in February of this year. But like most Capcom fighting games, an updated version is always around the corner and will probably run you around $40.

“Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3″ is no different. We were fortunate enough to get our hands on this title about a week ago and although I can never seem to get good at the MVC games, I know what’s fun and what isn’t, and sure enough “Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3″ is a blast.

Before we get into the gameplay and changes of the UMVC3, one of the things that I noticed right away (well at least after I installed the 2.25GB game file) was that my the UI has been changed and is a lot less clunky than the previous version of the game. Some of the elements of the original title are still there that I wasn’t really a fan of like the way your Player Profile updates every time you go to the main menu and it makes it a bit annoying when you’re trying to hop in for a quick match. Between the music, graphics, cheesy vocal segues and the UI, this game feels like a classic arcade game and the Japanese influence is certainly there. Some new gamers may not appreciate it but as a 28 year old, I love it.

Some of the changes that players will see in UMVC3 is the addition of 12 new characters. On the Marvel side, we see the addition of Nova, Rocket Raccoon, Iron Fist, Doctor Strange, Ghost Rider and, my personal favorite, Hawkeye. From Capcom, Frank West, Vergil, Phoenix Wright, Nemesis, Firebrand and Strider.

If you have already familiarized yourself with the original MVC3, then you really won’t find more than some minor visual tweaks, more characters and new levels. If you have yet to play, or own, MVC3, then the $40 price tage is a pretty sweet spot for a solid fighting game and chances are if you frequent Angry Web you’re either a gamer, you read comic books, or both, and will love “Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3″.

Since one of the featured girls from last weekend’s Comikaze expo has been featured on Reddit, I am going to do everyone a favor and give them 2 extra days to bask in some awesome costumes that came out of the expo last weekend in Los Angeles, CA.

We found some great looking costumes in the few hours that we were there and tried to get shots of the best ones! I haven’t been able to touch any of the photos up yet so here are all the raw images. You can expect a full comprehensive Comikaze article in the next day or so.
